Schuylkill River Loop Run                  Nov 4, 2007
The 35th Annual Schuykill River Loop Run was held this year as an
afternoon event. It was a beautiful day to run. Over 100 runners and walkers
participated with Steve Jaconeth crossing the finish line first in 51:41.The
women's race was won by Julie Deery (Philadelphia Athletic Charities Track
Club member) in 55:41. The 8.4 mile race is the oldest and most
consecutively held road race in the City of Philadelphia and first being held
in 1972.   The course record of 40:08 set by George Buckheit which was set
in 1981 still stands as the Loop Record.  The women's record is 49:10 set by
Olympian Jen Rhines in 2002.  Philadelphia Athletic Charities pledged
$250 to any runner who can break the course record.
The 7th Annual Kelly Drive 5k Racewalk was also held as part of the Loop
event.  The race is an up and back course along the Kelly Drive side of the
river and contested by some of the best racewalkers in the area.  The
winners were Dan Andreasen (26:10) and Bernadette McNulty (36:18).
PAC offered  the Students Run Philly Style Program runners a entry discount
with over 35 young runners from 12-18 years old participating in the Loop
Race.  The Students Run Program is in it's 3rd year and is targeted to inner
city Philly students with the mission of using the training and participation in
distance running as a way to improve health , discipline and academics.
The program last for 9 months and students run in races from 5k to the
Philadelphia Marathon. Over 300 runners were part of the program.
PAC donated race proceeds of the race to the Fairmount Park System who
is responsible for the creation and upkeep of all the parks in Philadelphia of
which the Schuylkill River Loop Race is entirely on.  Dave Thomas took over
race direction and ownership of the race in 1993
Philadelphia Catholic League Cross Country Open Championships  (also
serves as the Mid Atlantic USATF  XC Championship     Oct 27.2007

The PCL Open was held once again at the historic Belmont Plateau course.
The race was held despite the "swamp like" conditions created by a steady 2
day downpour of rain.It made the 2007 event an interesting and mud fest fun
filled event for all who attended.  Even thought the race is open to anyone,
many Catholic League alumni return each year to tackle the High School
Course they once ran on many years before. Many of the alumni return
wearing their HS colors and vests and do the best they can challenging the
likes of Flagpole and Parachute hills.
This year's winners were Terrence Lee (17:13) ans Joan Hunter (20:19).  The
race also served as the Mid Atlantic USATF Championship and this Terrence
Lee (Juventus TC)  and Joan Hunter( Philadelphia Athletic Charities Track
Club)  were the Champs.   La Salle High (Men) and Kennedy Kendrick
(Women) were the PCL Alumni Team Champs. La Salle (Boys) and Cardinal
O'Hara were the team champions in the varsity championship.
Philadelphia Athletic Charities has been producing the event the last 5 years
and this year raised over $500 for the Philadelphia Track and Field Coaches
Association to help pay for awards for the athletes for the year. Sponsors for
the event were Dr Steve Blassi, Dr Ira Meyer of Montgomery Podiatrics, Kelly,
Welde, John Burns (PCL Champ from La Salle) and 2 time Catholic League
Champion of XC, John Jennings (Cardinal Dougherty).

Students Run Philly Style   2007

Philadelphia Athletic Charities President, Dave Thomas, is
proud to announce the association with the
Student Run Philly
Style
program for a second season.  Thomas has served as
Coaching Advisor to the Group leaders since 2005 by teaching
valuable ways on how to train young runners to become
distance runners, organizing practice sessions, injury
prevention and team motivation.
The Student Run Philly Style program is in it's third year under
the guidance of the National Nursing Centers Consortum. It is
a program designed to use distance running as vehicle to
involve inner city youth from North and West Philadelphia as a
way to teach team building, self esteem, and discipline . The 9
month long program involves a number of church and youth
associations led by group leaders who have the 12-18 year
olds train and run a series of races from 5k to the marathon.
This year the Student Runners were participants in the Clean
Air Council 5k, Broad St Run, Philadelphia Distance Run , and
Rothman 8k.
Over 30 runners from Students Run Philly Style participated in
the PAC's Schuylkill River Loop Run in October.  Over 30
runner finished the Loop Race. The SRPS program is an
excellent program and fits into our mission statement of
promoting the importance of fitness and health along with
community involvement, we look forward to being involved in
2007 and will continue to support them by allowing entries into
the Loop Race" says Thomas.  2007 saw it's biggest
participation in the program with over 300 participants.
